Get a driver's licence

Longer than an ID, and the reason many jobs stay out of reach without it.

What it is

An Ohio driver's licence. Getting one as an adult means a permit, practice, and two tests.

Why it matters

A lot of work in Northeast Ohio is hard to reach by bus, especially shifts that start or end outside daytime hours. A licence widens what you can take.

Who issues it

Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles

What to have with you

  • The same identity documents a state ID needs
  • Proof of your Social Security number
  • Two proofs of Ohio residency

Cost and how long

There are several costs: the knowledge test, the permit, driver training if you are under 18, the road test and the licence. Check current amounts, and ask any programme that helps with transport whether it covers testing fees.

Get your temporary permit first

You take a knowledge test and a vision screening. You can study the manual free online before you go.

Sort out a car for the road test

You must bring a legal, insured vehicle to the test. This stops many people. Ask a driving school, a workforce programme or a mentoring organisation, because some provide a car for the test.

Look for help with the costs

Some transport and workforce programmes pay for lessons, testing or insurance for young adults leaving care. Search transport in the resource list.

Where this comes from

Written by the Student Civic Leaders cohort from the public guidance of the organisations below. They own the rules and the current fees; we only explain the process. Where the two differ, believe them, and tell us so we can fix it.

This is information, not legal or financial advice, and rules and fees change. Bridge explains how to get these things and never holds, uploads or stores a document for you. If you get stuck, dial 211 and a person will help you work out the next step.
