Replace your Social Security card

You need the number for work. You rarely need the card itself.

What it is

A card showing your name and Social Security number. The number matters far more than the card, and knowing your number is often enough.

Why it matters

An employer needs your number to put you on payroll. Benefits, bank accounts and some housing applications ask for it too.

Who issues it

Social Security Administration

What to have with you

  • Proof of identity, usually a state ID, driver's licence or passport
  • Proof of citizenship if this is your first card, usually a birth certificate
  • Original documents or certified copies. They will not accept photocopies

Cost and how long

Replacing the card is free. Anyone charging you for this is not the SSA.

Check whether you actually need the card

If you already know your number, many things can be done without the physical card. Ask before you spend a day on it.

Try online first

If you have a state ID and meet the conditions, you can request a replacement through a my Social Security account without going anywhere.

Otherwise apply in person or by mail

You will need original documents. Call the office first and ask exactly what they will accept, so you do not lose a trip.

Never pay for this

Replacement is free and there is a limit on how many you can get. Sites that charge a fee are reselling a free service.

Where this comes from

Written by the Student Civic Leaders cohort from the public guidance of the organisations below. They own the rules and the current fees; we only explain the process. Where the two differ, believe them, and tell us so we can fix it.

This is information, not legal or financial advice, and rules and fees change. Bridge explains how to get these things and never holds, uploads or stores a document for you. If you get stuck, dial 211 and a person will help you work out the next step.
